Legacy: A Tribute to Leslie West

All-Star Tribute: On December 23, 2020, the music world had to say goodbye to one of its great, influential rock guitarists: Leslie West. The American musician was the founder, singer and guitarist of the rock band Mountain.

Leslie West's music is primarily reserved for the older generation in terms of its elementary importance for hard rock and heavy metal. Co-founding the band MOUNTAIN in 1968, billed as the louder version of CREAM in the music press, the songs were characterized in part by extreme volume levels and heavily distorted guitar solos by Leslie West. He was considered a magician at Gibson. This was joined by lyrical ballads, which were always characterized by a strong guitar dominance. MOUNTAIN's best-known pieces were Mississippi Queen, released in 1970, Theme For An Imaginary Western written by Jack Bruce (CREAM), and the fantastic Nantucket Sleighride, which sometimes ended in a mammoth jam lasting more than thirty minutes. With a delay, MOUNTAIN rose to supergroup status with their brilliant performance at the legendary Woodstock Festival in 1969 and shines with fast guitar solo work, a rough and dirty voice and a merciless heaviness. Incidentally, Leslie West always counts Eric Clapton among his most important musical influences. Until his death in 2020, Leslie West, who had a leg amputated in 2001 due to diabetes, was on stage and after the time with MOUNTAIN in 1972 as the super trio West, Bruce (Jack Bruce from CREAM) & Laing, a reunion of MOUNTAIN, the LESLIE WEST BAND and as a solo artist kept recording new albums and played concerts until the end. Saturday Night in San Francisco (Remastered)

There is probably no one who is enthusiastic about guitar music who does not know the legendary and many times re-released album "Friday Night in San Francisco".  Three guitar virtuosos play live and with stunning acoustic qualities.  What hardly anyone knew: the following Saturday there were two more concerts with the same cast, which were also recorded, but at which an almost completely different set was played.  In 1980, a master was created from the two concerts with countless cuts, which was never published.

It was Al Di Meola's management who remembered that the band still existed, but disappointment was soon to set in.  The master had not been stored well and was actually unusable.  At least the producer from Impex Records from the USA didn't want to be disappointed by this.  Despite everything, what was heard was just too good and one thing was immediately clear: Saturday night was even better than the legendary Friday.

Al Di Meola, guitar
John McLaughlin, guitar
Paco de Lucia, guitar

Recorded live December 5, 1980 at the Warfield Theatre, San Francisco.
