ROON

I don't understand, there is a way to connect MacMini strait to Devialet with USB and enjoy Exclusive mode ?

hk6230, please share if switching to NUC gave something that you didn't got with MacMini .
Thanks

You can use USB on Mac to Devialet and enjoy exclusive and integer mode, which gives you the best SQ with bitperfect.

The major difference is Mac Mini has a lower fan noise (almost zero noise) and Intel NUC still has fan noise which can be heard in a quiet room when you are 2-3 feet away from it.

The main reason I changed to NUC from Mac is because of Roon which according to their CTO, an Intel NUC i5 with 8GB + SSD will kick the butts of i7 Mini. And, I can try to add JPlay, if I wanted to. With the impending headless RoonServer, I do believe NUC will be a better option. And, I can add a Linear Power Supply for my NUC at a much lower price than Mac Mini/Mojo option.

Then, of course, my familiarity with WinOS over OSX, also contribute to my switch decision.

I guess most people posting on this particular thread are interested in Roon, or have already fallen in love with it (I have). Now, Roon have been saying that us Dev owners should be pushing them to adopt Roon, and I could not agree more. Apparently, if you read the Roon forum, Devialet have not spoken again with Roon, since the initial contact was made. That's not a good sign.

If Devialet were to give us RoonSpeaker protocol, we would have a much better solution than anything they can hope to provide via Dialogue / Spark. We would not need AIR, as the Roon protocol takes over duties to stream direct to the Dev.

You will need a Roon core, and like hk6230 I have invested in a NUC and installed this in a nice Tranquil fanless case. So I am set to go with a headless Roon core when it is released. This will become my music server and sit with the other IT equipment (router, switch, NAS etc). I would prefer my Dev 200 to sit alone in my listening room, and just be streamed to from the Roon core via network using the soon to be released Roon remote app working on an iPad as the control point.

I'm all for raising our voices and letting Devialet know that Roon is very desirable, I just cannot see Spark even getting close to matching it for controlling one's music. Hope a few of you feel the same, and voice likewise wishes.

I agree and have already emailed Devialet on the topic.

I have gotten a reply, I concur others too should submit this directly to Devialet.

So for those who know about these things, which would actually offer the best sound quality with a Devialet, Roonspeaker, Ravenna or Devialet Air? (assuming it's ever fixed)

Any ideas?

Spot on Confused. It's all about SQ.

Ravenna is very interesting, an IP transport protocol designed for audio! That's surely where AIR should be headed...

But RoonSpeaker will be an network protocol designed for audio right in each manufacturers unit, the exact nature is yet to be revealed. And Roon will, no doubt, in time add various enhancements to DSP and up sampling (HQ Player integration is apparently in the works) that will broaden the SQ stakes. But that's only a part of Roon, the databasing and hyperlinking is second to none, and this for me is a huge part of enjoying my music. I have not found a better way of getting around my music, both local and web based.

Don't know about Ravenna (does anybody yet?) and as for AIR, well we all know how that stands currently.

ROON is impressive and the integration of TIDAL is awesome! So I definitely would love to use ROON as my standard player. However, even if the SQ on AIR/wifi/ethernet is pretty, no: really good (somewhat better than USB – in my case), JRiver MC20 does a bit better. A bit more detailed, a bit more open, a bit more precise. I listened to a whole variety of different music and the result was always the same: JRiver outperforms ROON quite clearly.

In both players I use « Devialet AIR » as speakers, both tell me that I am in WASAPI mode, exclusive, bit perfect. My music files are on a standard NAS, controlled by a win 8.1 laptop.

Somebody has an idea how I can raise ROON SQ to JRiver level?

P.S.: Just in the moment I am listening to one of ROON's/TIDALS's terrific playlists!

Quite a lot of info and discussion on their forum, including some early days talk of possible HQ player integration.

But to be honest, having tried loads of players, Roon and Tidal just does it for me - I listen to far more music, and discover more, and get enjoyment that way and kind of just stopped worrying about the finer details of playback. I compared to Audirvana+ and couldn't honestly detect much difference. That said, they are clever guys over there, and I've no doubt SQ will only improve. I've abandoned Air and just reverted to USB, its somewhat irrelevant to me whether Air is better or not, as its just not a viable solution and I just cant be bothered with it.

There are a few things that dont quite fit my workflow as it stands now in Roon, but then neither does anything outside of iTunes really… its so entwined into my other devices.

Then the other thing is cost, because I dont like subscription models, so the outright is at the high-end price wise.
But then its like nothing else I've ever used in terms of discovery and linking collections together, so its unique and I've listened to and discovered more streamed music in the past few days than I had in the last year before trialling Roon.

I do hope they integrate Qobuz though, I have an affinity to that provider and like to support a more local service rather than another American one.

If you don't know already, there's a voting system for 'ideas' on Qobuz help fpages, and Roon integration is currently number two. If you're a subscriber, and want it integrated into Roon, feel free to add your votes (you need to be logged into Qobuz) - you never know it might help them along their way. It seems Roon are now keen and it's a Qobuz holding things up.
