Audio Science Review of Expert 200.
#61
I don't think its related to money either, but it certainly help in increasing visibility/profile by attacking a brand and building your own. They are trying to build a brand by emphasizing that they are different than other audio magazines where the emphasis is on measurement/facts without any bias towards advertised products or connections in the industry. (Although I do see quite a bit of bias in the commentary. Read the reviews for products by Harman vs smaller companies that have pushed back on ASR for earlier reviews). I think Miller Audio Research does a much better job at measuring and presenting the facts. I like stereophile's measurements as well. John Atkinson keeps is very close to real in his commentary and publishes the measurements even if they are bad.

Some posters at ASR are really over the top. Thats why I hardly visit ASR, although some of the information is really good. I want the hobby to be enjoyable. As Prim mentioned above, for some folks, measurement is not everything, otherwise most tube based amps will have no market. In case of Devialet though, since they tout their specs in the marketing material, its a fair game.

I feel bad for a guy who loaned ASR the amp without even listening to it. That should be a lesson for other folks to send any equipment for testing purpose. Even if the product is under warranty, some warranties provide coverage only if you maintain or use the product as directed. Sending the product for 3rd party testing is not using the product as directed.
At this time ASR should actually reimburse the guy for his losses. If you are building your reputation as an independent tester, you should have at least some skin in the game. I think publishing measurement is great, but then just leave it at that and do not provide any ratings or biased commentary. If people go there for measurements, they certainly know how to read them.
I really hope we all including Devialet ignore ASR. Devialet has nothing to gain from responding. On the other hand, if they publish the measurement here, they would be listening to their customers :-)

If you read his comments on the ASR thread, you'll see that the guy who loaned the amp is perfectly happy. He doesn't seem to want ASR to reimburse him for anything. So there's really no need to feel bad for him or imply that he feels hard done by

Its apparently a set up. Why he didn't test a Expert PRO brand new unit from Devialet?

WHAT is the value for him to test a discontinue unit? for second hand buyer ?? lol, don't try to joke mate. This guy is a rubbish, I know his game. He won't get a $1 from Devialet.

I guess by that logic, we should shut down all of the subforums on devialetchat that discuss discontinued models?
What's the value in anyone discussing them?

Good news is that Devialet has promised to fix the broken device. Maybe we will see an another set of measurements after it has been fixed?

More alarming is the fact that several different reviews are now indicating the Expert limiting output power on high frequencies. This is against regulations in US according to "amirm".

I have created a support ticket if we could get an official answer to these questions and points.

Amirm is a tinfoil hatted tw@t who substitutes graphs and measurements for his non-existent pair of ears. If any of you feel that somehow Devialet are short changing you on your hardware’s capability maybe you should not have bought it in the first place. He is a pseudo scientific sower of dissent with nothing but malign intent.

Maybe the Expert Pro lineup can be simply renamed in the US from D140-D220-D250 to D3-D4-D6 (or whatever the measurements show) to comply with the regulations?  Wink

Haha, hilarious! Big Grin That would certainly "fix" the regulation issue.

Joking aside, it would be nice to hear something from Devialet on this. Maybe there is a logical reason behind, like maybe all the reviewers (Stereophile, Miller Audio Research, Amir, etc) all used some incorrect configuration that explains these interesting results.

A quote from Jeff Fritz in his review of the Devialet 120 for Soundstage Ultra:

The bottom line: The Devialet 120 -- with its paltry 120Wpc into 6 ohms and its price of $6495 -- was a
great match for the Magico Q7s, whose cost matches their size: $185,000/pair.

And you're creating a ticket to find out whether there's something wrong with your amp because some geezer doesn't understand how to measure an amp so advanced, not even John Atkinson can measure it properly? What are you going to do if Devialet get back to you and tell you that indeed, your amp only delivers 5 to 8 Watt per channel? Ask for your money back?

Wow, I did not expect this from Devialet! Maybe Devialet has changed their "silence" policy...

If I'd bought an amp that could only deliver a tiny fraction of its claimed output, for sure I'd want my money back - even if I loved the sound. I would want to take my money back and run as far away as I could from a company that lied to me like that.
