MBL omnidirectional speakers
#11
Hi...i am a new user here. In my case my problem is the larger MBL speakers that the different driver have very obvious different acoustical centers and it is very obvious when one moves ones ears up and down. So a problem with vertical but not at all horizontal.

If you really want Omni speakers but not pay the MBL prices, I’ve read great things about OHM speakers. Made in the US.

Looks like they only sell in North America. Not much about the technology other site but I might read some of the reviews. They might go into it a bit deeper.

Have you tried them?

No, I have never seen or heard them in person. I hadn’t heard of them until recently when I was looking for new speakers a few months ago and saw a few YouTube reviews etc. and became intrigued with the Omni speakers because of MBL.

I did not realize they only sell in North America. If you like what you read, you can always inquire if they would ship overseas.

Ohm were a well known brand back sometime around the 60's/70's/80-'s—not sure about the actual date because my memory is getting rather hazy 40 or so years on. I never heard them but they used a version of the Walsh tweeter if I remember correctly. Then they seemed to disappear. I don't know if the current speakers are made by someone who bought the name or whether it's still the original company. I haven't heard the originals either. The ads I've seen for the current Ohms show a relatively small speaker, quite modestly priced, and nowhere near in the same class as the MBLs

Other alternatives for omnidirectional speakers are Duevel and German Physiks. both also German makers. I have used a Danish omni, the Davone Mojo, which is a small stand mount 2 way which I quite liked but it's in nowhere near the same class as MBL or the more expensive Duevels.

The Ohms were not really capable of real Hifi, they were extremely sounded. The concept has been adopted by the german company German Physiks which usually get very good tests, maybe worth a look.

I use the MBL 101e mkII's with Expert Pro 1000. The sound quality is amazing, but very unforgiving when it comes to bad recordings. I would love the option of room correction though.

Very good memory! According to their website they have been made in Brooklyn since 1971. And they refer to their speaker models as the “ohm Walsh”

And I hope I did not imply they were on par with mbl. MBL is pure high fi porn in my book,  but will ever be out of my reach unless something drastically changes in my Foreseeable future. Just wanted to provide an obtainable Omni option and recalled reading good things about the ohms.

1971—almost my misspent youth. I turned 24 in 1971. I don't think MBL was around then but the Ohm's back then were exotic enough to rate as hi fi porn of some kind :-)

Duevel is a lot more obtainable than MBL when it comes to price and they have a range of options. German Physiks is also more affordable than MBL but I think are more expensive than Duevel. I think Larsen make some omnis. In the US Shahininian make a range of speakers that, if not really omni, use the idea of reflections off a wide range of room surfaces as part of their design. There's the small Davone Mojo I mentioned.

Then there's other sorts of speakers that rely on wide radiation front and back such as electrostatics and some other panel speaker designs, and speakers with tweeters and sometimes mids also on the back panel so they fire to the rear as well as on the front panel. They aren't true omnis but they do rely on the room a lot more than normal speakers.

There's quite a few options out there.

I have the Ohm Walsh, pay the price and stick with the MBL.
