Turntable phono to WIFI (not bluetooth)
#1
Hi all

I want to connect my old turntable to a single phantom classic - for security/sound quality reasons I don't want to use bluetooth so a phono to bluetooth converter is out.

If I keep my phantom near the turntable I can use a phono to Toslink cable and connect the Phantom optical input - any recommendation - I've been looking at:
https://www.project-audio.com/en/product...x-e-phono/ as this has a Moving Magnet input.

At the moment the turntable is on the opposite side of the room to the phantom, is there is a limit to the length of digital optical cable? I don't want to spend a fortune on this, I don't use the turntable often enough though I do still use it. At the moment it is connected to an analog amp with its own speakers - trouble is my room is starting to look like a hifi showroom!

Can anyone tell me if its possible to go the WIFI route:
Eg Phono analoge in > digital converter > WIFI out (airplay?) to the Phantom?

As far as I can see this isn't currently possible ?

Thanks for any advice.

TOSlink (optical) can run over several meters so you should be able to leave your vinyl player where it is. I'd recommend to have the TOSlink cable made by BlueJeans cable https://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/dig.../index.htm Make sure you mention that the cable will be used with a Phantom. The space around the input on the Phantom is tight. Re.: WIFI, I think you are right, there doesn't seem to be devices like that.

Make sure you order the right one as they have two E box models one with and one without toslink.

i use a very small preamp made for DJ from Artcessories ( 60$) than i connect it to a tiny audo converter from analog to digital from LINDY. ( 35$) and i work like a charm. Very small setpup. Can be hide behind the turntable.

The preamp may be on par with the Pro-Ject, but the Lindy seems to be a 16bit 48kHz device. The Pro-Ject uses a 24/96 ADC.

Hi All
Thanks so much for the replies and the heads up on the difference between the Pro-ject and the Lindy.

I did find it quite difficult to get the specs on the optical input of the Phantom - I couldn't find much information on the Devialet site as to what the maximum optical input specifications are?

What I did forget is that I already have a Pro-Ject analogue pre-amp so I could save a little by just getting the ADC as Sebc suggests- I will give this some thought and bank balance checks Smile

This forum is great for getting specific details of suitable products - google, ebay and amazon all fall flat when searching for Analog (or Analogue) to Digital, or ADC devices as they all mix them up with Digital to Analogue boxes - I wonder how many people inadvertently purchase the wrong device - or is it just me!

The TOSlink input on the Phantom will handle up to 24/192. I believe the input is autosensing (that is standard on SPDIF) so will adapt to the incoming signal. You will probably be fine with the Lindy.

Hi all, got this device from Flexson
https://www.flexson.com/flexson-analogue...r-flxa2d10 at £29 from Amazon.co.uk

and I'm happy to say it works well with the Phantom and my turntable - actually sounds better than my valve amp and speaker setup which always had an annoying earth 'hum' which I could never fully get rid of - through the Phantom it's completely gone, I have no idea why that might be?

Thanks again for all the advice.

Hi Kantblue,

I assume that you are using the Flexon ADC in combination with a pre amp? And if yes, which one do you use?

I already have an analog preamp from Pro-ject, so i i'm thinking of getting the new phono box E with optical output or just get a ADC like you. It's quite challenging to find specifications of this ADC. Do you know if it's also 16 bit / 48KHz like the Lindy? This is the only thing keeping me from going down this path. I don't know if it even makes a difference when listening to a record..
