For the linking duties I am in no doubt then that Dev, as the claim, has a balun taking care of this due to config, However Thierry also recommended me to use the AES/EBU input on the master hence it is a better input. From this connection I can't see how the system could recognize the Unitiserve 75 ohm output without an auto detect function!? So I guess using the AES/EBU is a compromise that is still better than the S/PDIF input. Here I definitely see a possibility for the 75 to 110 conversion.

Cheers/Mike

PMFJI. I see your concern Mike.
I believe the Devialet opinion is that the AES input is the best input but to benefit from it you will need a source with ab AES/EBU output, if I understand correctly.
The original recommended link between dual mono D-Premiers may well be a special case, as you surmise, not relevant in the simple case of a source component (though it may be...).
In my system I have a Meridian Control 15 which may have the best SQ of my sources connected via SPDIF, since that is the standard of its available output, and my Goldmund CD transport which may have the best sound quality of my sources Smile connected by AES/EBU since it offers both SPDIF and AES/EBU outputs.
FWIW,
Frank
Hi Frank

In not sure I follow!

Which one would be your best source? It seems that you describe both of them as "best"

Sorry to confuse!
I wrote each one may be best. IMO the differences are small but somebody may prefer one, somebody else the other.

iMac+iTunes+AIR Wi-Fi is my best source for some albums whilst the NDX+S/PDIF is better for others...

I agree with you both. I believe the quest for the ultimate sound quality is an endless and a subjective journey. A journey that one should enjoy while on it rather than delaying the gratification to when one gets to that elusive destination Smile
Hi,

I put my order to Audioprana on halt. I have ordered some Lundahl 1574 (75 to 110 ohm conversion). These I will install, due to their very small size inside the Neutrik XLR connector ie more or less directly soldered to the XLR pins.
First I will modify my current BNC-RCA to a BNC-75 ohm coaxial-1574-XLR to be used between the Unitiserve and Dev AES/EBU input.
I will report back asap I've put some mileage on it.

By the way, can anyone here confirm that when linking (configuring) Dev units in the RCA-XLR that the Companion is set to receive a 75 ohm signal instead of 110 ohm at the AES/EBU input!?
And why, when using the AES/EBU input no other inputs can be used on the Companion?

Best/Mike

This is because that when using the companion inputs, effectively the companion becomes the master, and the signal goes the other way through the link cable. So coax to XLR would become XLR to coax, which does not work.

I have actually ordered an Audioprana coax to XLR cable, basically I am intrigued enough to part with 260euros to give the coax to XLR link a try. I might get it a bit sooner now your order is on hold!

Hi,

Thanks for input!

Will you use the Audioprana cable between streamer and Dev or between Dev units?
I have read that others used this as link cable with very positive results but I still wonder, if the input now becomes 75 ohm due to config, how that works with a 110 ohm signal in?

Looking forward to your report.

By the way I am going for new speaker as new tonearm so my mind is a bit split for focus at the moment.

Cheers/Mike

But Confused, I'm confused (sorry) - how can the signal go the other way? By definition, with this link, all the companion inputs are disabled so all the input signals, including wifi, go to the master and then the link is from the master coax to the companion XLR. The only external connection with the companion is any pre-amp out which one uses (which was the reason I needed the master/companion connected via coax/XLR rather than coax/coax).

Ian -you are not confused! You are correct, the companion inputs cannot be used if the Coax to XLR link is utilised. However, if using the coax to coax link, then companion inputs can be used, the master and companion effectively switch roles and yes, the signal goes the other way.
Any,

Is the AES/EBU input 'prepared' for 75 ohm input when configured for linking duties?

Best/Mike
