I am itching to check out the Bryston BDP-2 now that it is RoonReady. It would be good to hear a direct comparison of SQ vs. AIR3b

Wasn't Betamax OK technologically? We were a VHS household when I was at school, but my friend had Betamax, and I seem to remember watching a whole film without obvious dropouts or sudden unexpected blasts of 'bright screen'.

I believe that it was technically superior to VHS, but ultimately failed because VHS became more popular with consumers, for whatever reason. With so many viable alternatives out there, of which Roon is but one, I simply cannot understand the ostrich approach that Devialet are taking with regard to streaming.

Yes, your right, the analogy doesn't quite fit, Betamax was actually superb technology in it's day, but come on!  All credit Zappydev, his 'Good Ship AIR Stability' link was absolutely hilarious!  Made me smile! Smile

Fixed.

Actually, you all left out the best video technology of that era. And I'm not just saying this because I'm Dutch (-ish) but Philips' Video 2000 was very good. I worked for an electronics repair company in the early 90's and was always flabbergasted that Video 2000 didn't make it on top of the list. Not only did it have a much better picture quality, you could also turn the tape around and record another 4 hours on the other side.

My assessment of picture quality would be Video 2000, Betamax and then VHS. The reason VHS made it was because they were the first to enter the video store market.

Huh

A pig in a poke?! Big Grin

Why should anyone trust them after all these months of not fixed AIR problems and poor communication?! AND: the option of streaming right from a NAS has been promised years ago. As I mentioned: just the same concerning room correction. No one is talking about this feature anymore.

Against your information that the new streaming board will never ever obviate AIR, my information from Devialet was totaly contrary (as you know). They told me, that the idea is to remove Air from the talking part between Roon and Expert. In the end Roon on an iDevice (or whatever) could adress/pilot the Expert.

So it seems to be always the same in Paris: one does not know what the other says Confused

A lot of pigs in a poke, I guess though Undecided

AND I don´t believe, they will stop the upgrades at the end of the year 2016. They wan´t to earn money with it. So why should they stop? They just want everyone to upgrade as fast as possible. Do they really think they can take their costumers for idiots?

No good idea Dodgy

As someone much smarter than me once said:

Fool me once, shame on you,

Fool me twice, shame on me.

I was taken in by their marketing BS two years ago, and spent what was (for me)  a considerable sum. Do they seriously expect me to pay half as much again and still not even have the performance that was originally promised ? I think not . . .

I've wondered about that for a while and haven't taken the time to investigate but did Devialet themselves actually promise streaming on the existing Expert range or was that something reviewers just wrote about? Does anybody have proof or a quote from Devialet?
BTW, I'm not saying I don't believe you Nightmare. I'm just not sure and I would like to know.  Huh

It was more like cost and recording time that gave VHS the advantage over Betamax.
