Interestingly comments/thoughts about sound quality changing from firmware update to firmware update are not unique to Devialet, this has also been true of various Auralic Aries firmware updates, wherein in all but one case there was no intent by the manufacturer to change the sound quality. Similarly you can view the release history of Audirvana + with people saving various versions of the product based on certain sound characteristics.

FWIW.

The Phase + or - is meant to be used on album by album or even track by track while you play, not as a permanent setting. On my 250 remote the button is labelled 'Invert'. On the new remote it is 'Tone'. I assign phase invert to this button and use it a lot

You are absolutely right Org.  So far, I haven't encountered a track or album that I think is out-of-phase (telltale signs: cavernous sound; instrument or singer is not planted solidly within the soundstage - everything sounds like it is all over the place).  I guess I need to play with and use this feature more often.  I've been too caught up just enjoying the music.

Jojo Isip

I am sorry but you have got this completely wrong. The effects you are talking about happen when ONE speaker is wired incorrectly, i.e. 1 speaker is in positive phase and one is in negative phase. This is a gross error which is usually obvious.

What the Devialet phase button does is change BOTH speakers to either positive or negative phase (assuming you had them set up correctly in the first place).
This is a much more subtle effect. Personally I cannot distinguish between positive and negative phase.

Hi Org,

Thank you for clearing that up.  For my (and others') enlightenment, how do you know if what you are listening to is correctly phased?  Simply put, please describe the difference and characteristics of both.  If your preamp does not have an "invert phase" switch, how do you fix the problem?

Regards,
Jojo
Did do a longer listening session yesterday evening / today night and in course of that comparing 8.1.2, 8.1.3 Beta and 8.13
To me the main audible difference to me seems to be related to the "fixing" of SAM (which Devialet is stating in their release notes)

Not sure what the "issue correction for some SAM profiles" exactly is doing but in my setup with B&W 800 Diamond and SAM 100% they do loose more and more bass foundation in the order 8.1.2 - 8.1.3 Beta - 8.1.3. By the same token the sound stage / overall sound seems to get less direct / sharp and somewhat - to my ears - more relaxed by that although with some mid / high emphasis due to less bass (although the bass itself seems to be crisper and cleaner with 8.1.3).

When listening without SAM for me there is very little difference between 8.1.2 - 8.1.3 Beta - 8.1.3 as well as the difference between SAM ON and OFF is much smaller with FW 8.1.3

Not yet sure what is the best mixture for me (as I have been very happy with 8.1.2 and somewhat got used to this sound)
Might revert back to 8.1.2 as currently somewhat getting tired of continuous SD Card / FW version changes... (as positive as I do see them in course of feature / SQ improvements ;-)

I did not write that, canyelles did here: http://devialetchat.com/showthread.php?t...7#pid21927

My response to finding the correct phase setting is here: http://devialetchat.com/showthread.php?t...1#pid21931

Audibility of absolute phase is highly system (mostly speakers) dependent. The invert function on the Devialet remote was very important for me when I bought the amplifier. Sound quality being the most important of course.
Back in the analog days I'd make sure absolute phase for my system was correct for the majority of LP's by connecting + and - of the cartridge pins accordingly. Then I'd swap + and - on speakers if I played an album I knew had the opposite phase. Not a very practical solution!

If Devialet ever decides to omit the invert feature I will probably sell my Devialet amplifier. I am not sure Phantom's have an invert function...
Post # 101. Thanks for posting the 8.1.3 beta at Google Drive. But someone teach me how to download the 17 files from the Google Drive to my PC computer(win 7). Thanks.

Hoping this can help. Once you click on the link, a new window will display a downward pointing arrow icon. Click on that icon and a white rectangular window will appear. Just hover/move your mouse toward the center/middle area of browser and you will see a download icon (see screenshot). Once you click on that, the download will begin. Then unzip the file and transfer all the files found in the folder to your SD card. Reinsert the card into unit and plug the main leads back into the AC wall receptacle, the unit will power up and upload the new firmware.

How do I go about adjusting the SAM level for my speakers?

I programmed the Tone button of the Devialet remote for SAM ON/OFF and when I press it, it either turns SAM on or SAM off. But how do I adjust the percentage of SAM?

Devialet: when will you implement the SAM % to be adjustable from the control app, as well as all other parameters that can be adjusted?
One should not have to leave their listening position to do so.
