It's interesting that Guillaume and others preferred the beta version, whereas I preferred the "official" release.  Although my preference for the "official" version was basically because SAM 2 worked much better, this of course may not be the case with other speakers.

Just to mention that someone (sorry, can't remember who maybe Guilllaume?) previously posted that ihm might mean 'interface homme machine'.

Or interactions homme-machine Smile

Indeed, which suggests this file has zero impact on SQ and that we've all gone insane thinking it sounds any different!  Although I have the excuse that I had also swapped to 4gb SD cards for the configurations when I switched from the beta, suggesting the latter, not the firmware, had made the difference.  Or maybe it suggests I've plain gone bonkers, either way, I have absolutely no plans for any more firmware swaps for a very long time!
If there's no SQ-related stuff in this module then the only difference I can see is that the memory map would look slightly different and I can't see how that would affect sound quality. It is very strange. I have to admit I have the pre-release version and it clearly sounds better to me. The release version sounds no different to 8.1.2.

My money's on cache alignment Smile

(Only kidding...or am I?)
In Devialet's own words........

Do a short press on Tone button. The software information will be displayed. The "IHM" will be the version (i.e: 7.1.1)
That's interesting Confused - this is the page where they claim the IHM version is the software version.

Now on the 8.1.3 pre-release (and largely for all recent firmwares I've seen the first screen shows 'SW 8.1.3' or whatever version it is. IHM is on the next screen along with other module versions. On the 8.1.3 pre-release the IHM version is 8.1.2, not 8.1.3.

Well possibly! Also I don't know whether it's different when FPGAs are involved, having never dealt with them before. There's a whole lot more complexity there.

Here's what I've learned so far from this very friendly and informative chat group.

1.  The latest FW 8.1.3 has now equalled or surpassed the famed 7.1.3 in SQ.  It is now safe and finally upgrade.  Now I can finally listen to DSD files without compromising sound quality.
2.  Use low capacity SD cards.  Max 4GB.  Use the one that came with your Devialet.  Note:  Tell me where you can find and buy 4GB cards these days.  The lowest capacity most stores have is the 8GB one.  When loading firmware or config files, do them one at a time.  Rule:  Do not load both the FW and config files at the same time.
3.  Best sound for me is when DPM is turned off.  Keep that baby always warm and ready!
4.  Turn off or disable all unused inputs.  I turned off AIR wireless WIFI - absolutely useless.  Ethernet is fine if you have a good internet service.  Mine is WEBPASS which is ultra stable and capable of over 400 Mb/s!  Lucky me!
5.  Feed your Devialet with pure and unrestrained power and you will be sonically rewarded.  I got mine plugged into an Isoclean 80A3 with 4 Nordost QV2s.  Smoooooth, liquid sound with incredible resolution!
6.  Isolate your Devialet from external and internal vibrations.  I got mine sitting on 3 Stillpoint Ultras.  I also changed my rack's 4 feet to Nordost Sort Futs.  Pay attention to these minute details to extract that last iota of sonic performance.
7.  For enjoyment, try different configurations.  I was pleasantly suprised when I used the D200 as a preamp and partnered it with my Symphonic Line RG7 MK4.  The resultant sound is magnificent!  Apparently the DEV's built-in DAC is world class and totally outshone my other fancy and expensive converter.

For the mean time, I am done fiddling and messing around.  Time to indulge myself and just listen and enjoy the luscious sounds emanating from this amazing music machine!

Happy listening,
Newbie Jojo

And what would be your advice for the Phase : + or - ? And SAM level ?

(26-Jul-2015, 12:53)Confused Wrote: [ -> ](the firmware files look identical except for file "ihm_0800.hex" which is a later date than the beta version I had, although I haven't a clue what "ihm_0800.hex" might do.  Anyone know?)

The version of the firmware that I was testing did not have the updated "ihm_0800.hex" file. In my setup it seems to sound better than the latest official firmware release. A number of others have also confirmed that this is the case.

This is TRUE! Official 8.1.3 with updated 0800 file sounds flat and without ,,body" comparing with previous version sended to some persons by Devialet.
8.1.3 is fixing some problems with certain SAM profiles. 8.1.2 was giving a fat and boomy bass with some profiles. So if you like fat and boomy bass then maybe 8.1.3 now sound flat. You should always mention if you compare SQ with or without SAM.
For my speakers SAM set to 0% is still fat and boomy, it increases the bass around 70hz by about 7db. I can use this bug to fill some gaps but I have to use the jRiver EQ to get rid of excessive peaks. The result is now very good, but without EQ SAM would be unusable for me.
btw, no change in this behaviour between 8.1.2 and 8.1.3. And the profile for my speakers has been updated for 8.1.2 already which introduces this bass boost. The old profile was doing nearly nothing and more degrading SQ.
