As to the higher cost, twin SSD device I learned through my listening tests that build quality and inclusion of SSD's (and higher cost power supplies) does not necessarly equate to better (or appreciably better) sound. The Lumin A1 build is impressive compared to the Melco N1A, although I found the sound quality of N1A as good as Lumin or Aurender. Audio forums are plentiful with people gloating over component size, build quality and price. Check out audioshark.com forum where serious ego massaging is held as routine and natural. The Melco N1A with twin HDD's is quiet in operation and right up there in sound quality with other digital players at double the price.
Interesting comments Bob. Which Aurender model(s) did you compare to the N1A?
Bob Ryan, could you please share more details of your comparison of the Melco vs the Aurender/Lumin, especially on the "as good" bit.

With the Lumin A1, did you use the upsampling function and, if so, did it make a difference? Which SPDIF cable was used?

With the Melco, are you using MinimServer, and is upsampling an option?

Mostly X100, but have had time with N100.

Couple points. My opinions are of course subjective. One needs to do their own listening comparisons (same associated components, same files, volume set at same dB, same listening location/space). I am an older fellow sans bat hearing of younger audiophiles. My Lumin A1 vs Melco N1A not an apples-to-apples comparison being Lumin A1 internal Dac via files from my Synology DS play twin bay drive, vs Devialet Dac with files stored within the Melco. The X100 is more an apples-to-apples comparison in cost, but could be happy with either device and sound quality of Lumin A1, Melco N1A, Aurender X100 and Aurender N100 are all very close to each other. If you're on cusp of buying one of these devices and budget matters, the N1A is tops IME.

I did try my (sold) Lumin A1 with and without upsampling. Far and away I prefer files at their native sampling rates, although some files did seem to sound a tiny bit better (and brother is that a can of worms saying that) upsampled to the next higher sampling rate. I always used USB with my comparisons with the Melco and Aurender's. The Lumin is a different situation. Before you consider spending more for the Lumin A1 (Lumin does have more affordable models as likely you know), listen to the Melco N1A and the Aurender X100. You may decide not to spend more. I have not used MinimServer with my Melco. I use the Lumin app on an iPad to control my N1A, but it is not the ideal app solution for the Melco.
@ BOb Ryan, give the Arcam Musiclife app a go. I think it is much superior to the Lumin app. For me the Lumin app was so difficult to read
I can't get the Arcam MusicLife app to find my Melco as a source. Is there a trick to get it to find it?
Have you changed it to mode 0?
It took a while to find my Devialet the first time I used it
Thanks, Boy Ryan. I was hoping for a comparison of the digital outputs of the Lumin A1 vs the Melco N1A.

On the upsampling, its a mixed bag but native is more engaging on my Lumin A1.
Not been here for a while but interesting to catch up on this thread. Added an N1A to front my system last week. Very impressed so far.
