I really like the new FW, kudos to Melco!
I can't compare the SQ to AIR3, but I don't bother right now, just enjoying the N1A  Wink

Just curious - how does S/PDIF feature in your system? Do you not connect N1A to you Devialet via your Audioquest USB cable?

Yes, I connect the N1A via USB. The Diamond S/PDIF is for connecting master and slave, because I couldn't use the Crystal Cable from Devialet since the two units are about 1.5m apart.

Ah right - I should have guessed. Thanks Smile
My local dealer told me the next firmware upgrade will allow the N1 to "play Roon". He was not familiar with Roon and did not have the details. Since Melco's processor is not good enough to run the Server, could it be integrating the Roon Bridge? Anyone has information on this please?
Melco just released a new firmware and now you can use any USB CD/DVD drive as a transport. I have tested the feature and the sound quality is excellent. My Melco is connected via an AudioQuest Carbon USB cable to Devialet 400. Here are some more detials:

Ver. 3.10 [27.July.2016]
-New Firmware Notification
-If N1 connect to Internet, new firmware notification will show up on the display.
-Notification can be off on the setting menu.
-Improvement of Media Server
-Navigation tree update
-N1 is now able to show information of “Artist” as “Album Artist”.
-“Track Artist” will be shown under “Track” folder after Artist, Artist Index or Genre.
-Improvement of CD drives support
-Day and time will be the album name in case N1 cannot obtain Meta Date of the CD because of lack of information on database or off-line of Internet.
-Add variation of tag information for FLAC
-Add offset sampling menu
-CD transport
-N1 can play CD when the CD drive and USB-DAC are connected.
-Play all tracks of CD and repeat the album. (No track repeat)
-Track control on the front display
I only just noticed this - if you have firmware v3.10 installed then upgrade to v3.11 post haste!  It looks like they introduced a problem with v3.10 whereby you can't browse certain shares, plus there could be data loss. My Melco actually suffered this and crashed  a few times. I thought I had a faulty hard disk or the unit was going wonky, but no it's the firmware at fault. I had to fully reinitialize and restore all the data again (I keep a master copy on my Qnap).

Thanks for the heads up! Luckily I still didn't have time to update and I guess I rather keep waiting for the next release, just to be shure.
Two weeks ago I compared Melco N1A (with the latest firmware update) vs AIR 3 and Melco blew the AIR out to the stratosphere!

In few words - much more analog like sound, soundstage much bigger, more natural and coherent, less harshness in high frequencies. Like listening to a hifi and than going to the real hiend stuff.

Since I got it just for a trial sake, I didn't have the slightest doubt regarding SQ.

The only thing that gets me annoyed is Kinsky app and album/track listing (at some moments not visable via iOS app).. I thought it was much more practical.

The MOST IMPORTANT THING.. After this experience I am coverted to a an absolute source-first believer Smile

But that is only true if you want your Digital system to sound like an analogue one surely.

I want my digital system to sound like real music, and the only real (or easiest) reference is live music.

Word like "analogue" could be easily missunderstood here. By "analogue" I didn't mean "the absence of musical/audio information". On the contrary. More as "lifilike".

Few weeks ago I could bet that AIR would, at least, edge Melco. It was really no brainer SQ wise.

Hi Filips, can you share how were your equipment being setup when comparing the Melco with the AIR3b?

@tategoi

1. Melco N1A > Wireworld Platinum Starlight USB > D400 > Vivid B1D

2 . MacBook Pro (i7, 10GB, SSD 240GB, El Capitano) > AIR 3 beta > > D400 > Vivid B1D
