Well, Hifi_swlon just beat me to it, but I also received and set up my Pi yesterday, using the pfm guide adapted for OSX, but the above walk-through solves that problem for other Mac-only users.

Full kudos to the Roon team - the setup was incredibly straightforward, and Roon immediately found the Pi as a zone. I can't test the SQ yet because I am waiting for my Digi+ to arrive, but I am quite excited by that.

My other experiment, following Gary's lead, was to shift the Roon core from my NUC to an iMac, and use the NUC just as an endpoint running AIR. Well, the experiment is over: again, the Roon setup was trivial (apart from the fact that the database seems not to be transportable, but no biggie for me). Based on the few minutes of listening that I achieved, I am tempted to say that the SQ was improved, but I probably imagined that. Certainly, it was no worse. However, it wasn't very long before the énorme tas de merde that masquerades as AIR started playing its usual tricks, crashing the NUC for no reason. Whilst it no longer crashed the Core, which was on the iMac, it obviously dropped the zone, and I had difficulties to re-attach to it afterwards, so it was still extremely disruptive. After this happened a couple of times, and I satisfied myself that it was not due to anything else that I was doing on the machines, I decided that enough was enough, and re-configured the NUC as Core, but without even bothering to set up AIR. It has been a total waste of time and money, and Devialet should be hanging their heads in shame at releasing such a crock of sh*t and then totally failing to support it. If anyone wants to see how audio software could and should be developed and supported, then they need to look no further than Roon.

For now, I can live with USB, but to me it clearly sounds inferior to AIR (when it works) and there is no way I am going down the road of fancy re-clockers and other voodoo just to fix something that should not even be necessary - it was mainly the one-box appeal of Devialet that led me to buy it in the first place.

This is supposed to be a hobby that brings pleasure - well, epic fail on that one !

As soon as I get the Dig+ I will see how that compares. If it is better than my USB, then I may hang on to it for a while, otherwise I am washing my hands of the whole over-hyped nonsense. If les grenouilles swallow their pride and talk to Roon, then they would truly have a world-beating system, but unless or until that happens, the whole experience has left an extremely bitter taste with me, and I would not consider spending one more penny on Devialet products. A company that treats customers with such mind-boggling arrogance deserves to fail.
I´m using the Digi+, because I need optical out for connecting my Phantoms.

It is working fine with Max2Play/Squeezelight. As you can see above I will try the set up ROON bridge linux directly. As I understand I have to install the Digi+ software before.

Is there anybody out there, who has installed this ?

Pretty sure it's a yes on the Roon forum…..

Roon > DiracAudioProcessor (DRC) > Weiss INT203 > digital XLR (10 meters) > AES/EBU into D800

No problem whatsoever and addictive sound trough the digital XLR input into D800. Too few people discovered XLR's outstanding sonic performance.

Alternatively Roon > AIR (ethernet) > dedicated ethernet with fixed IP > D800. Problem is, this doesn't work with Dirac. SQ also excellent but not as good as XLR setup.

Forget USB that hasn't been developed for media data.
aes sounds indeed nice for Devialet.

however in general taming noise is harder for aes in comparison to usb.

That's a very interesting set-up Mohmm!   Am I right in thinking that using the Weiss INT203 is kind of the same idea as a Mutec MC-3+USB, except the Weiss is fed via firewire rather than USB?  (I have no idea which of the two ultimately offers the best sound quality by the way)   You mention the AIR alternative, have you ever tried a comparison between this Weiss set up and AIR?

Too bad AIR failed you again. If you have a spare/old notebook/PC running Win 8.1, you can just add it into the network, anyway within the same network, and you can continue testing AIR without disrupting your current setup. FYI, I connect my old notebook to a wifi router in another room, with a very long (at least 50m) Ethernet cable. I hope one day AIR will work well for all, whether from our tweaking and/or with Devialet releasing a new, stable, working AIR driver. Latter is most preferred.

BTW, RoonBridge can also be set to auto-start just like RoonServer. And, if Devialet AIR is set to "always stream to it automatically", then your zone in RoonBridge should be there, even after a system reboot.

Hi Mohmm - the Weiss solution seems interesting, but I don't believe there is any way to get a FireWire output from my NUC ?

Hi Gary - thank you for your further ideas   Smile

I had the auto-start working, but when Roonbridge came back up, Roon did not re-discover it without a re-boot of the Core, so I was no further forward. Most likely a Roon issue, I guess.
Yes, it is most likely Roon issue. In fact, today there's a new update of Roon and RoonBridge. The latest RoonBridge 1.0 Build 18 will not be discovered by Roon 1.2 Build 128. I have to reinstall the last build 13 for it to be discoverable again.
