I'm back at USB! Sad

Too bad. For me, I just have to continue using AIR as I don't have any good USB cable and add-ons now (all sold). I'm totally dependent on AIR. Hopefully, a new AIR will be announced during Munich show.
Face it ..AIR will always be unreliable for some (including me) and the new version is .. well Vapourware .. dont hold your breath for some fresh air...

Hi Gary - for far less than the price of a good USB cable, see what the Raspberry Pi + HiFiBerry can achieve via SP/DIF. I am amazed at the SQ irrespective of the price, and the Roon implementation is a breeze.
Please don't tempt me. Tongue

STEP BY STEP GUIDE (see full post previously)

Hifi_swlon,

Thanks so much for your step by step guide. I am now happily listening to a DSD64 recording of Sarah Vaughan's "Live at Rosies" on my D200 from USB via Raspberry Pi 3 acting as a ethernet connected RoonBridge. Marvellous!

Just some updates on the steps if I may:

1) I initially tried with a first generation Raspberry Pi I had lying around and the RoonBridge installer fails - saying that a Model 2 or latest Model 3 required to run ( V7 CPU inside) . So I splashed out €35 on a new Model B V3.

2) Remote SSH seems not to be enabled with the current Rasbian Lite install by default so you need to have a USB keyboard and HDMI monitor to log in initially.

Then when you run the

Code:
sudo raspi-config

command, before selecting (1) to Expand the Filesystem you need to select (8) Advanced Options and make sure SSH is Enabled. Only when I did that was I able to log in remotely.

Otherwise your step by step guide worked perfectly and saved me a ton of hours figuring things out.

Great news Mark…

Interesting re the ssh thing, I haven't seen anyone else come across this so it must be a recent change? Glad you got it working though.

Yes the Roon code only runs on Arm v7 I found out.

I ended up doing a more detailed write up over at Roon forums: https://community.roonlabs.com/t/setting...rsion/9915

Also, RBM (one of the members with advanced Linux/Pi skills) has written a nice set of more complete instructions: https://community.roonlabs.com/t/roon-br...ox-i/10138

Mi HifiBerry DAC+ (3.5mm jack version) just arrived so as soon as I get time I'll add that and hopefully have much better SQ. The trickiest part is going to be making a hole in the Pi case….
I installed roon trial version today on my macbook pro, same Air problems with high res files,sq very lesser quality than jriver19, the app is cool though

I can confirm Mark´s SSH thing. If you install the lite version, you have to enable SSH first. There was another mistake in the ROON download published in this forum - I used the original ROON link (on the ROON forum).

I downloaded Jessie Lite and ssh was enabled. Were you connecting as pi user? I believe it's disabled for root which is more standard.

Will check and fix the download link. In fact I might just repoint the post to the ones on the Roon forums as they're more up to date.
Saw today on ROON forum that some have installed ROON server on X64 Synology NAS, no need for a computer to run the server, this together with a Sonore microRendu is looking really tempting. To bad my old NAS is not a X64 cpu.
