Thanks for the pointer!  I had not read that.  Interesting insight there.   I'll have to see if I can hear a difference when running Roon Server rather than the full Roon (or running Roon Bridge on a separate PC).

I am now hooked on Roon/Tidal combination, I now have millions of tracks at my disposal, I will most likely continue after the trial. However, I am not satisfied with the SQ as I find the noise floor is very high compared to playing from a CD transport. Looking at your signature, your NUC is running the RoonServer and MM is running the RoonBridge and AIR3b. Does this combination yield a better SQ? I am thinking of buying a Mac Mini (rumored after WWDC?) to run as core, and using the iMac as a RoonBridge, controlled via the iPad.

Hi there - this has come up before, the discussion of streaming v CD transport that is. I have heard on many occasions people say that high end CD transports sound better than streaming. In fact at the recent streamer day at OAC I got chatting with the dCS rep who told me that the best sound quality possible from the Vivaldi rig came from using the Vivaldi Transport.

I don't think it's as simple as just placing Roonserver and RoonBridge/AIR 3 on separate computers, although that may indeed bring some benefit. I think you need to look at the complete playback chain.

My approach is to take the view (rightly or wrongly) that everything matters. So I try and optimise everything from routers, switches to ethernet cables. As you know I also use the d1 server from Totaldac which features a very powerful reclocker and also happens to be Roon Ready. But you could easily use a microRendu or similar instead.

Oh before I forget - my experience with Tidal hasn't been great. From a SQ point of view I far prefer Qobuz but of course this isn't integrated into Roon.

Guillaume

Thanks for the input Guillaume. With the limited rack space that I have, I'm trying not to introduce another hardware into the mix. The one currently available is reserved for the Aurender or Melco. I plan to put the Mac Mini in another room, and possibly running just RoonServer and AIR3. This way AIR3 will not be affected by the going-ons in my iMac and LCD screen noises and hopefully it will improve the SQ.

Some other things that I will venture include insulating the LAN cable that feeds into the Devialet, and changing the power of my router/switch to linear power supply.

Hopefully they will narrow the gaps between streaming and CD direct.
I don't know if it's already posted somewhere on the forum yet, but at the following location you can get Roon discount codes for 10% off. It's not so much as some lucky guys here have got, but then again, it's something! I've got mine there and it works flawlessly.

Patience is indeed a virtue! Finally cracked it (I think) it seems that Roon and Air were not starting up properly as all I did was put the respective shortcuts into the Win 10 start up folder and bingo! everything working beautifully. I had set Air to start with Windows but it obviously was not following the instruction and every time I started it manually it failed to stay on. Someone with more knowledge than me can possibly explain what was wrong but for now I am just enjoying stunning sound and if it carries on there will be an Auralic Aries for sale!
A grateful thanks to all who have offered assistance.

Well it has been 4 days now of lots and lots of music and so far faultless playing through Roon and Air. The only thing that confuses me is that in the Roon audio device it shows Devialet air wasapi but I can only get it to play via Ethernet. If I try to click on the air black dot icon it just vanishes and I have no means of checking the settings. The sound is excellent and I suppose I shouldn't meddle but Like many here, I am always trying to see if I can improve things. Is there any difference between Ethernet Air and wireless Air?

Well you may or may not get lots of opinions on whether AIR is better wireless vs ethernet for sound quality, as well as which method is more reliable.

I am happily using ethernet and have not compared to wireless. From a reliability standpoint I feel better off using ethernet. From a sound quality perspective I am very happy with ethernet.

I am sure you have checked, but do you have wireless enable in the Configurator as well? And wireless enabled on your PC? And that they are on the same wireless network?

Hi, yes, all enabled but no matter, I think I should just be thankful it is all working perfectly, perhaps I am shooting for the moon!

Hi, yes, all enabled but no matter, I think I should just be thankful it is all working perfectly, perhaps I am shooting for the moon!

So bearing in mind I am using this on a Mac, the only other settings to double check in Configurator are that the WIFI settings have correct SSID, correct password, and that in the Advanced Settings for WIFI that the settings their match the Advanced Settings for ethernet ( DHCP, Fixed IP, network Mask )

And ensure that ADHOC mode in Wireless Advanced settings is OFF.

You probably have already done that. If you wanted to love life on the EDGE, you could try disabling the ethernet input on the Devialet and only having the WIFI input enabled, personally I don't think that would make a difference.
For me WFI AIR simply works! But while ETH is working, if i switch to WIFI on my macbook, we need to identify on Roon to press pause-play again (dont remember). Basically, find the zone on Roon again and stream again and it works just fine.

SQ - I found WIFI better than ETH maybe because it simply worked for me as AIR never worked for me in the past and the euphoria that AIR-ETH works and 2x euphoria that AIR-WIFI ALSO works just fine Smile. I tried seriously on both with the same song-tracks I normally use to check SQ (Allan Taylor "Color to the Moon", MK "Private Investigation" and Eagles "Hotel Cal") I found ETH and WIFI to be just same.
For those wanting to run Roon on a NAS it's been made more "officially possible" now: http://kb.roonlabs.com/Roon_Server_on_NAS

Glad to hear Air wifi is working for you! I'm running ROON Server on a Surface 4 tablet (Windows) with no remote......

I guess you're using AIR3? Are you streaming any 24/96 or 24/192 over wifi? I find that AIR WIFI works pretty well with 16/44 from TIDAL but chokes when I play a 24/96 or up from my networked computer drive.
