With the release of Roon 1.2 & RoonBridge and the myriad of comments here, I did what I said I was never going to do again... gave AIR another chance.   I setup a separate, stripped down Win 10 PC and installed RoonBridge and AIR on it.  That was 6 days ago and damned if it didn't work right off.   But as we all know, getting AIR working is not that hard, keeping it working is the challenge.

So yesterday - 5 days in - and it was still working! No stuttering, no white noise.  Even with hi-res (no, had not yet braved DSD).   So I started thinking that AIR's big problem was simply dealing with a heavily multitasked PC.  The stripped-down PC was clearly allowing AIR to work as it should.  Sounded pretty awesome as well.

Too good to be true?  Late last night, after playing hi-res content for hours... I was just kinda dozing off and... wait for it... you know it's coming... has AIR ever failed us?... of course it has!   white noise!  AIR is nothing if not predictable.   The good news - that's by far the longest I've ever successfully kept AIR running.   But that's like saying I've got a great car - it runs for 5 days straight - until the wheels fall off.

So once again I'll state - I will never try using AIR again.  Ever.  Well, until the new release is out and blows us all away.  Hey, it could happen.  Maybe it'll work for 10 days straight.  100% improvement!

Never say Never!

I have been down the exact same road as you, with RoonBridge was my third rodeo. For now Air is back in the closet, not to be dusted off till Devialet has a new version or a I decide to permanently go down a different route ( i.e. microRendu)
May I ask is there any advantage to use a Linux server for RoonServer vs. Win10? Now that I can use AIR on a RoonBridge, I can move my RoonServer to a non-Win/OSX-based system, if it makes any significant differences.
Well yes if that same Linux server is your NAS as well, and assuming that NAS has enough horsepower.

However in general, Windows/MacOS/Linux, the only thing I hear from time to time is that the Windows version has a slight performance edge. I think it really depends on which platform you prefer to use, or other factors.
Well, the reason I asked is because now that we have RoonBridge, we don't need the server be a Win/OSX platform. And, with Linux, maybe we can reduce/get rid of all unnecessary programs and maybe we can make it a 'super-duper' Roon player.
I concur with your line of thought.
Sounds like a big waste of time to me. You have a perfectly good server going right now, tweaking it won't change the sound quality at your end point considering you are using network delivery twice in you music topology.

You could just listen to some music instead, or white noise whatever AIR decides is appropriate.

Agree with Dr Tone esp if your RoonServer isn't connected to your DAC. Also Roon is actually a native Win Program. That said, if you just want to do it - why not. Personally I steer clear of Linux unless there's a very specific reason to use it. Unless you're really interested in Linux, and preferably reasonably competent in scripting etc, it always seems like far too much hassle to me. Apple nailed Linux with OSX! Everything else is a nightmare in my opinion, the only benefit is it's free. And you can avoid Windows I suppose, so come to think of it maybe it is a good idea! Wink

My joy ended in a blue screen of death after 3.5 days. 10 more minutes after rebooting it went into another blue screen.
I'm back at USB! Sad
Thanks @Dr Tone @Hifi_swlon. Suddenly, my desire to try out Linux server dies out. Big Grin

I will try it out when I have absolutely nothing better to do.
