Couldn't agree more.

They could probably even buy something with Roon already working (like dcs) or a custom version that fits their needs and they'd have a solid solution at launch. Probably a lot of happy customers too!
If dCS can use and thinks that the streamerboards they use from Streamunlimited are good that must be a fast solution to get a working streamerboard that supports almost everything.

DSD native and DXD support is something I think many would see as a bonus on a new streamerboard perhaps the DSD part does not mean so much regarding to the conversion to PCM inside the Devialet.

Indeed. I understand it took Totaldac about 6 months to become RoonReady. Vincent was particularly proud of achieving this so quickly. Others have taken (or are taking) much, much longer.

My guess is that Devialet are looking at a classic sunk costs scenario here after investing so much into Spark.

Unless they commit now I just don't see this being delivered in 2017.

More likely the Devialet OS is essentially bringing Spark to the Expert range, along with some limited UPnP functionality.

Oh no - don't say that! You're meant to be the positive one! Big Grin

There is absolutely no way that Devialet will be able to bring out a fully fledged UPnP solution in under 12 months... it's taken LINN years and years to get to where they are with their OpenHome implementation and Kazoo... their best option is to go with something from StreamUnlimited but something tells me they won't do that...

The clue is surely in the name (Devialet OS - used in Phantom) and in the company's current focus on Phantom which has enabled Devialet to double its turnover in the past year alone.

So we will see Phantom streaming technology coming to the Expert, in the same way that SAM did.

Now do you think Devialet will dump Spark after all that hard work to get it to where it is now?

Devialet will view ROON as a niche player that is set to make a fair bit of money through additional ROON subscriptions, given Devialet's large base of users. So I see a bit of a negotiation taking place behind the scenes there... and based on what we hear from ROON themselves very little is happening in this regard!

That's what I used to think but once RoonReady reaches critical mass - at least in terms of brand uptake - their hand will be forced a bit because I actually think people will buy based on it, and will give them a pretty hard time about the lack of it. Even reviewers seem to be falling in love with it, so it's not going to look great if reviews start emphasising the negatives of lack of RoonReady and the weakness of Spark more than they focus on the good aspects of the hardware. I think they're nearing critical mass, and to me Naim signifies a 'brands must have it' point since they were adamant they weren't supporting it, and from what I hear the Naim ecosystem is much better and had way more development hours than Spark.

I mean bundle Spark for free sure, because not everyone wants Roon, but to make it the only choice? I think that will devalue the Experts.

But of course that's my logic. But I think I might just get this one right. Question is like you say though - when? My guess is they ain't doin much chatting to Roon because they either don't have a prototype streamerboard, or they'll adapt an off the shelf one, in which case maybe the manufacturer takes the brunt of the work there?

All guesses right now.

Meanwhile the rendu will do its thing, but would love to see RoonReady in 2017.

Just to add, I'm not sure how niche Roon is now really. The last time they mentioned it they had a LOT of subscribers. It's likely to gain the largest user base of any audio software outside iTunes (or the streaming services).
Does anyone know how many Roon subscribers there are? I'm a Roon subscriber, and I do use it, but if I'm honest I'm waiting to see what the next update looks like, and depending on what features appear (or don't appear) I might just let my subscription lapse. I understand why people love it, but it's not for everyone. I feel a poll coming on....

I think I saw 14k somewhere but it might be more now.

My biggest bugbear is the lack of Qobuz integration, my understanding is that this is unlikely to happen now.

Other than that it's perfect for me really. I think it was very smart of Totaldac to jump on this and deliver the goods quickly.

Last I heard it mentioned was when someone quoted Danny who replied 'we're not at 14,000 any more'. I don't think the implication was they'd gone down. Wink

[doh, always best to read other posts before replying isn't it...]

Yeah, but you won't need Roon once Qobuz release their 'Roon-like' features that are apparently imminent...
