I'm not sure I'd trust my (new Wink) Devialet to Roons volume sliders, but I can't anyway now I've gone microRendu and the Macs at the other end if the house. Interesting though.

This sounds intresting. If Devialet dont implement Roon in the new streamerboard this might be a solution to run Roon, AIR3 on a NUC and control the volume via RS232.

You're teasing again...when will the beans be spilt? Smile

No idea what you mean....

You can set Roon to control the device volume by AIR but I'm not brave enough either!

You would think with the Roon architecture it would be simple to separate the control from the music, send the music wherever, and the control to rs232 via Pi.

Is there something wrong with the Roon volume sliders?

Far too sensitive for my liking. You can easily touch the bar and set max, and often just placing your finger on the control to make an adjustment can make it jump up or down before you've intended to move it. iPhones particularly bad. It's ok now because I only use it on small speakers and set their physical controls quite low so 100% is the max I'm happy to listen to. If it were directly connected to the Devialet and in control of its full range I'd be really worried. I'd never let anyone else use it that's for sure!

I have do say if there's one thing Devialet have done right it's the Expert volume control. The physical and the iPhone one. Shame the apps out of date but the rotary knob gives a really nice, safe control.

Yikes, that sounds like life on the edge, the edge of big financial loss that is.
Could anyone using Roon on Mac please let me know whether it now works nicely with AIR (3.0.x)?  Last time I tried it, which was nearly a year ago, it sounded awful; I think there was some kind of sync problem resulting in frequent, periodic, just-about-audbile glitches.

Why don't I just try it for myself?  I'd need to arrange another Roon trial to find out for myself and there's little point in doing so if it's known not to work.

Thanks in anticipation...

I have been using Roon with AIR 3.0 RC and earlier version 3s since its existence and always with a dedicated ethernet cable and fixed IP. Additionally I had the signal passing Dirac Audio Processor before AIR. I must say it is a mixed impression. There are days when it just works perfectly well with no noise whatsoever and there are days when I had to switch to feeding my D800 through the XLR via Weiss Firewire and iTunes. The latter always worked fine and extremely clean. I also used Dirac>AIR>D800 both with iTunes and Roon and have the impression that with Roon the occasional noise is more likely than with iTunes.

I am not an IT person but my impression is that the AIR problem may have to do with caching, because after quitting and restarting AIR it mostly was better. Additionally it certainly has to do with other network processes like the Mac contacting a NAS etc. Then there may be a problem with Roon itself given the better performance with iTunes.

I am running OS 10.11.6, iMac 2015, the library is on the Mac drive.

I never tried the AIR wireless option.

I definitely hear of people using the two together successfully. I think it needs the extra buffering in Roon in the setup (the friendly named 'power of two buffer'). One of the developers was also working on serial connection/control for expert series, so I imagine they're familiar with Devialet now.

I'm sure they'd allow another trial if you explain the AIR issues.

Can report that we have good success running ROON on an older Macbook, NAS stored music and AIR 3 beta ethernet hard wired to the Ds.  The sound easily bettered the Auralic Aries we had been using.  Never attempted via WIFI.
