If this is the case then surely the secondhand market for current D200 would fall off a cliff because it'd be cheaper to buy a D120 and upgrade to a 200+ than a D200. Am I missing something here?

List price in continental Europe for a new D120 is 4'990 EUR. List price for D200 is 6'990. So the path you are suggesting is not cheaper IMHO.

It's also not unreasonable to expect second hand prices to be affected by the arrival of a new range.

Finally, if you look at the prices offered on this site for a brand new D900, it becomes obvious that you should not consider your Devialet as a store of value, but as a beautiful appliance which produces great music.

Just my 2c anyway.

I agree completely with SB. The current equipment is beautiful, and most importantly, makes wonderful music.

On the second-hand/ upgrade issue, my impression is that the upgraded units will be fully the equal of a new, post hardware upgrade unit. I paid $7.000.00 (in round numbers, CDN$) for my D120 over a year ago. A D200 would have been about $10,000.00. If I can get the upgrade and have a better, more advanced '200+' for the same $10,000.00, then I have in fact lost nothing on my 'used' D120. To sell it and buy new again would certainly mean that I would lose money on the sale of my current D120.

Used equipment of almost every type loses value; a few odd exceptions exist in the world for collectable stuff, but it seems to me that the Devialet owners are very lucky in the availability and application of the upgrade. This upgrade appears to be very significant, and current owners are not being left behind at all. IMHO, as they say.

BTW, just back last night from Italy and Croatia, and I must say, I missed the music..... more even than I missed the cat (the cat is a big jazz fan, too).

Yes, but 200 owners who paid 10000 already shall pay zero for the upgrade in this case. I hv a feeling that new line will retail more expensive than the current line and then the upgrade price will be take this into consideration.

If i was to guess you will have to pay at least the price of the 120 again to get upgraded to the D200+.  It won't be $3000CDN that's for certain.
My confusion is whether the upgrade costs for the 120 and 200 to become a 200+ model will be the same. If so then clearly a D120 secondhand would be a more attractive buying proposition than a D200 if the buyer intends to upgrade. I'm guessing the upgrade costs won't be the same though, even though the set of upgrade parts will most likely be identical.

'Shall' or 'should'? I'm not certain of the meaning here. D200 owners would not get the upgrade for free- why should they?. If they upgrade, they pay the upgrade and get the bigger & better 200 pro (or whatever it becomes). D200 owners paid more and got more. I paid less and gave up some power and some input options.

We're all guessing at the upgrade costs, and it may well be more than $3K CDN. I'd be surprised it it was $6,995.00 for the upgrade. But who knows; I certainly don't. And fairly or not, it does seem to vary depending on location. But whatever, if the total cost of the original unit and the upgrade is close to the new retail cost of the 'plus' units, then we're still getting solid retained value for the current expert series.
If these predicted high costs for the hardware upgrade are proven correct I might actually consider leaving Devialet for another brand. Let's hope we are wrong...
